Attualmente, il petrolio è la predominante fonte di combustibile per i trasporti. L’utilizzo di diesel e benzina copre circa il 98% dei combustibili in uso nell’Unione Europea. Questa massiva dipendenza da un unico combustibile fossile dà luogo a tre problemi. Innanzitutto la combustione di tali carburanti conduce inevitabilmente ad emissioni di anidride carbonica (CO2), ed a svariati tipi di gas ad effetto serra. Già solo la quantità di CO2 emessa nell’ambito dei trasporti copre oltre il 30% delle emissioni globali. Inoltre, negli ultimi 15 anni, c’è stato un forte aumento del trasporto su strada, le cui proiezioni in futuro fanno intravedere in continuo e costante aumento, aggravando ulteriormente il problema.
