La tradizione orale fa risalire l’origine della Nazione a
più di 80.000 anni fa e la situa geograficamente nel cuore
delle Black Hills, negando così l’ipotesi secondo cui gli
indiani sarebbero arrivati in America attraverso lo stretto di
Bering.
Prima dell’arrivo dei bianchi i territori Lakota Sioux comprendevano il
Nord e Sud Dakota, il Colorado, il Wyoming, il Nebraska…un vasto
territorio dove essi vivevano in armonia con tutti gli altri esseri
del creato.
Fondata su leggi intimamente legate alla natura, la società
Lakota era il risultato di una cultura profondamente evoluta.
Talmente evoluta che, circa 300 anni fa, i Lakota accolsero i primi
emigranti bianchi con generosità, rispetto e tolleranza,
perché queste erano alcune delle sette virtù su cui
si fondava il loro sistema di vita.
In cambio ricevettero in dono coperte infettate di vaiolo, lo
sterminio sistematico del bisonte, loro prima fonte di
sopravvivenza, l’integrazione forzata e il furto legalizzato delle
loro terre.
Ma nonostante questo, le sette tribù ( Oglala, Minneconjou,
Sicangu, Hunkpapa, Two Kettle, Sans Arcs, Black Feet) che
compongono il Consiglio dei Sette Fuochi Lakota, l’Oceti Sakowin,
oggi sono ancora vive e continuano a vivere da Lakota in nove
riserve disseminate tra il Nord e il Sud Dakota.
Essi hanno una terra, una lingua, una legge, un’economia, una
spiritualità, cioè tutti quei requisiti che fanno di
un popolo una nazione.
