Le fuel cell (celle a combustibile)

Le fuel cell (celle a combustibile) sono sistemi elettrochimici capaci di convertire l’energia chimica di un combustibile (in genere idrogeno) direttamente in energia elettrica. Questo processo non avviene tramite un ciclo termico intermedio, e quindi non sono soggette alle limitazioni del ciclo di Carnot, permettendo rendimenti più elevati rispetto ai motori termici tradizionali. Il suo funzionamento è molto a simile a quello di una comune batteria. Tuttavia la differenza sostanziale sta nel fatto che, mentre le tipiche batterie consumano il combustibile di cui sono composte, le fuel cell invece permettono la reazione chimica ricevendo sostanze proveniente dall’esterno, e quindi non contenute nella propria struttura.
Questo processo quindi può avvenire fino a quando viene fornito, alla cella, il combustibile (idrogeno) e l’ossidante (aria od ossigeno).
